Estate Settlement Checklist GIC’s
Joint Certificates:
- Original or copies GIC certificate(s) - Effort Trust requires original
- Original death certificate for each financial institution
- Letter of direction for each financial institution
(redemption, change ownership, pay to the estate)
- Provide the address, DOB and SIN # of new owner for FINTRAC.
Individual Certificates
- Original or copies of GIC certificate(s) -Effort Trust requires original
- Original death certificate for each financial institution.
- Notarized copy of the Will for each financial institution.
- Letter of direction for each financial institution
(redemption - change ownership - pay to the estate)
- Provide address, DOB and SIN # of new owner, FCIDB.
- If being redeemed, need two pieces of ID from Executor of estate.
- Some companies require their own forms.
RRSP or RRIF
Beneficiary is the spouse
- Funds may be transferred directly to the spouse RRSP/RRIF without tax consequence.
- Death certificate for each financial institution.
- Letter of direction for each financial institution
(redemption - change ownership - pay to the estate).
- New RRSP/RRIF application or details of the existing RRSP/RRIF plan
(if spouse designated as beneficiary).
Beneficiary is NOT the spouse
- Death certificate for each financial institution.
- Letter of direction for each financial institution
(redemption - change ownership - pay to the estate).
- Notarized copy of the Will along with Letters of Probate for each Financial Institution.
- Two pieces of identification from each Executor(s) of Estate.
MUTUAL FUNDS
Non-Registered- Joint to Individual
- Original Death Certificate and each Fund Company
- Notarized copy of the Will for each Fund Company
- Letter of Direction from the Executors
- Individual Mutual Fund Application for each Company & Individual KYC
A fee of $10.00 per letter of direction may be charged if prepared by Scrivens. A flat administration fee of $50.00 may also be applied due photocopying, faxing, courier costs & to incorrect or missing documentation.
